Blending traditional values with modern design
Hamilton Boys’ High School built its new marae in late 2023 to honour Māori students and support the learning of te reo Māori, tikanga and culture. The award-winning design draws on the kōrero of Tāne and his journey to the heavens in search of knowledge. Its rising roofline and poutama-patterned brickwork symbolise aspiration, achievement and the pursuit of knowledge, bringing traditional Māori values together with the school’s ethos of unity and excellence.
The Challenge
The marae’s distinctive architecture required an HVAC (heating ventilation and air conditioning) solution that wouldn’t compromise the design. Traditional systems, with bulky ducting or visible high-wall units, were unsuitable for the large, open interior and steeply pitched roof. Large windows and varying occupancy also meant the system needed to manage significant thermal loads while delivering consistent fresh, conditioned air throughout the space.
The Solution
J.A. Russell selected The Unico System® for its compact, flexible ducting and ability to integrate discreetly into the vaulted ceiling. Working with Ambient Group, the team positioned the main plenum beneath the wharenui’s roof peak, with small supply ducts running through the ceiling cavities. The system delivers conditioned air to 97% of the marae compared with 75% from traditional units.
The overall result is a modern take on a traditional structure that allows the building’s cultural significance and design to remain the focus.
Black round outlets were chosen to provide visual interest and contrast against the timber finish of the ceiling, while also tying in with the window frames and track lighting.
